Historical Notes: Edmond P. Greer was born in 1788 in Pulaski County, Georgia. He married Frances Hodnett in Greene County, Georgia (1810). Greer owned about 280 acres of land and held several slaves in Mississippi. Early census records show E.P. Greer’s family and enslaved persons living in Lowndes County but Lowndes, which included a large area stretching through half the sate from west to east, was divided up by 1833 and the farthest western area became Carroll (see the interactive map at http://www.mapofus.org/_iframe/ms-maps.htm). In 1853, nineteen enslaved persons were given to his children, many of whom were his married daughters. In 1856, one of the heirs Daniel D. Murphy sold his property and inheritance (which included land and two enslaved persons Green and John) for cash, and gave the proceeds to the children of his sister-in-law Mary Greer Perkins.
