Historical Notes: Census records suggest that this Texas plantation was established around 1850, after Kinchen Knight migrated from Edgecombe County, North Carolina where he married Nancy Knight (also from Edgecombe Co., NC) in 1826. Before arriving in Texas, the family had lived in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi where Nancy had received ownership of several enslaved persons from her father’s plantation in North Carolina (Willis Knight Plantation). One of the formerly enslaved families remained in Lavaca Co. TX after emancipation (1870).
