Faunsdale Plantation

OVERVIEW

Location: Marengo County, Alabama; near the town of Dayton; one of the Alabama Canebreak Plantations
Date Constructed/ Founded: ca. 1830
Associated Surnames: Barron, Bennett, Brown, Collins, Dixon, Francis, Fortune, Harrison, Iredell, Mutton, Nathan, Newbern, Paine, Parsons, Pearson, Richmond, Stickney, Tayloe, Washington, Wills
Historical Notes: Faunsdale Plantation, named for Faunus the ancient Roman deity of the forest, was established in the 1830’s by two planters, Mr. Pearson and Henry Augustine Tayloe. In 1843, Faunsdale (960 acres) was purchased and managed by Dr. Thomas Alexander Harrison who moved to Alabama with his wife Louisa McKinlay Collins Harrison from Charles City County, Virginia; he brought a large number of slaves with him from Virginia. Louisa M. Collins was from Somerset Place (Washington Co., NC), the third largest plantation in North Carolina in 1865. Freedperson census records suggest that many of them had also come from the Collins estate in North Carolina. Dr. Harrison had eventually expanded Faunsdale by 240 acres before his death (buggy accident) on September 5, 1858. The nearby town of Faunsdale was named after his plantation in his honor. Years later, Louisa M.C. Harrison married William A. Stickney, an Episcopal minister of St. Michael’s Church (on the Faunsdale plantation). They were the final owners of Faunsdale before the Civil War.
