Buckland Plantation

OVERVIEW

Location: Washington County, Mississippi
Date Constructed/ Founded: ~1834
Associated Surnames: Anderson, Buckner, Evans, Parker
Historical Notes: After the Land Act of 1820 (April 24, 1820) Robert H. Buckner, from Kentucky, was one of many farmers who took advantage of the opportunity to amass their real estate by purchasing relatively small tracts of land in Mississippi, compared to previous requirements. Through several purchases, Buckner had bought a total of ~6470 acres in the Choctaw area: 240 in 1834, 1800 in 1837, 1406 in 1838, 1188 in 1840, 1686 in 1841, and 150 in 1843. He was elected in 1839 as the fourth Chancellor of Mississippi, retired from the bench in 1845, and died in 1846. In his will (1845) R.H. Buckner requested that members of his wife’s family (T. or F.A. Freeland) supervise the plantation for the benefit of his family. Buckland plantation may have stayed in the ownership of the Buckner family until Sarah F. Buckner’s death in 1895.
